The Fox and the Stork

The Fox and the Stork were friends.

One day the Fox decided to invite the Stork for dinner:

— “Come to my place, dear Stork, and see the feast I’ll set for you!”

The Stork came to the Fox’s home. The Fox cooked the food, poured it onto a flat plate, and set it before the Stork.

— “Please eat, my friend! I cooked it myself.”

The Stork tapped the plate with his long beak but could not pick anything up. The Fox, however, licked up all the food with his tongue.

Standing up, the Fox said, “Well, there isn’t any more food. Sorry!”

“Thank you, Fox, everything was… delicious,” said the Stork.

The next day, the Fox visited the Stork.

The Stork cooked a pot of food, poured it into a narrow-necked jug, and placed it on the table.

— “Please, help yourself! Don’t be shy,” said the Stork.

The Fox circled the jug but his tongue could not reach the food; he could only sniff it. The Stork, with his long beak, ate comfortably from the jug and finished it all.

“Well, Fox, I didn’t cook anything else — I hope you understand,” said the Stork.

The Fox was upset; he had planned to eat his fill at the Stork’s, but now he had to go home hungry.

From that day on, their friendship ended.

Moral

How you treat others is how you’ll be treated in return. True hospitality is fair and considerate.
