The History of Roman Numerals
Roman numerals were created more than two thousand years ago in Ancient Rome. They were used for trade, construction, and counting in the army. At that time, Arabic numbers (0, 1, 2…) did not exist, so the Romans invented their own special symbols.
Main Roman Numerals
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1000
How are numbers written?
- Small symbols are repeated: III = 3.
- If the smaller symbol comes before the larger, it is subtracted: IV = 4 (5–1).
- If the smaller comes after the larger, it is added: VI = 6 (5+1).
Where do we still see Roman numerals today?
- On clock faces (Ⅲ, Ⅸ, Ⅻ).
- In centuries and book chapters (21st century).
- On buildings and monuments to show dates.
- In sports and movies (“Olympics XXII”).
