Childhood and youth
Kara Karayev was born on February 5, 1918, in Baku, into a family of doctors. From early childhood, he showed a deep interest in music, studied in Baku, and then entered the Conservatory.
Education and teachers
He was a student of the famous composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. In 1938, Karayev was sent to the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under Dmitri Shostakovich, which greatly enriched his musical vision.
Creativity and main works
Karayev’s music combined national spirit with European classical traditions. His most famous works include:
- Ballets: “The Seven Beauties” (1952), “The Path of Thunder” (1958)
- Symphonies and symphonic suites
- Film music: “Don Quixote” (1957)
Worldwide fame
“The Seven Beauties” was performed not only in Azerbaijan but also in Moscow, Paris, and Tokyo. Through his music, Karayev introduced Azerbaijani culture to the world.

Kara Karayev died on May 13, 1982, in Moscow. His name remains forever in the history of Azerbaijani music.
