Children’s Fears and How to Handle Them
Fears are a normal part of development. With the right support, kids learn to cope.
Common fears
- Darkness and being alone
- Doctor and dentist visits
- Loud noises (thunder, fireworks, vacuum)
- Animals, especially dogs and insects
Parent basics
- Listen and validate: “It’s okay to feel scared.”
- No shaming or mocking.
- Gradual exposure: night light → dim light → brief darkness.
- Play & role-play: doctor–patient scenes with toys.
- Breathing & calm routine: 4–6 breathing, soft music, bedtime story.
When fears persist for months or disrupt daily life and sleep, consult a school counselor or child psychologist.
