Children’s Fears

Children’s Fears and How to Handle Them

Fears are a normal part of development. With the right support, kids learn to cope.

Common fears

  • Darkness and being alone
  • Doctor and dentist visits
  • Loud noises (thunder, fireworks, vacuum)
  • Animals, especially dogs and insects

Parent basics

  1. Listen and validate: “It’s okay to feel scared.”
  2. No shaming or mocking.
  3. Gradual exposure: night light → dim light → brief darkness.
  4. Play & role-play: doctor–patient scenes with toys.
  5. Breathing & calm routine: 4–6 breathing, soft music, bedtime story.

When fears persist for months or disrupt daily life and sleep, consult a school counselor or child psychologist.
