Fikret Amirov — Creator of Symphonic Mugham

Childhood and youth
Fikret Amirov was born on November 22, 1922, in Ganja into a family of musicians. His father, Mashadi Jamil Amirov, was a mugham master. From an early age, Fikret showed interest in music and learned to play the piano and other instruments.

Education and early steps
In 1940, he entered the Baku Conservatory. During World War II, he lost his father but continued his studies. As a student, he was already recognized as a talented composer. One of his early works was the opera “Nizami” (1948).

Creation of Symphonic Mugham
Amirov’s greatest innovation was the genre of symphonic mugham. In 1948 he wrote “Shur”, and in 1949 “Kurd Ovshari”. These works were performed both in Azerbaijan and abroad, bringing him international fame.

On the world stage
His music was played by symphony orchestras in Moscow, Paris, and New York. His works combined Eastern melodies with Western classical traditions.
