Baby Hedgehog

The Nameless Little One

A tiny baby hedgehog lived in a cozy burrow under a log. He often wandered through forest paths, always friendly and cheerful. Whenever he met other animals, he greeted them warmly.

“Hello, Sandy!” he said to one friend.
“Shall we play on the meadow?” he asked the rabbit.
“Grandfather Bear, may I look for mushrooms near your den?” he asked politely.

The baby hedgehog never forgot anyone’s name — but he himself had none. No one knew why. Perhaps one night in the dark forest he had lost it and forgotten. Or maybe he had yet to earn it by doing something worthy? He often thought about this and sometimes grew sad — he longed to have a name of his own.

A Cry for Help

One day, while running near a young tree, he heard a faint voice:
“Help me! Heeelp!”

The baby hedgehog stopped and listened carefully. Then he ran with his little steps toward an old oak tree.

Saving the Mouse

A heavy branch had fallen from the oak earlier that morning. Beneath it, a small mouse was trapped, tangled among the knots and unable to escape.

“I’ll help you, wait!” promised the hedgehog. He pushed and pulled, trying to move the branch aside. It was not easy, and he grew tired quickly, but he worked carefully to make a way out.

“Puff, puff!” he went with his little feet and paws.
“Puff, puff!” his spines brushed aside the leaves.

At last, the branch shifted, and the mouse was free.

A Name at Last

“Pi-pi-pi!” squeaked the mouse. “Puff, thank you!”

“What did you call me?” asked the hedgehog, surprised. “Puff?”

“Yes, yes. That’s the sound you made while saving me: ‘puff-puff.’”

“Hurray! Now I have a name — Puff!” cried the hedgehog with joy, running to his friends to introduce himself once again.

Moral

You don’t need great deeds to earn a name — kindness, care, and a small heart are enough.
